Phase 1: I-91 Northbound in its New Traffic Alignment

Early morning on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, I-91 Northbound was shifted into ‘final’ alignment north of the I-691 merge.

This new traffic alignment extends the on ramp from I-691 one (1) mile, providing a fourth lane from the I-691 merge to the Rest Area at the top of the hill. This allows traffic from I-691 additional time to get up to highway speed before merging into the I-91 traffic flow. This will be particularly beneficial for trucks that can not gain speed quickly as they climb the large hill. This should improve traffic flow and reduce congestion and delays for all vehicles traveling out of the interchange.

Additionally, an operational lane has also been added between the on ramp from Preston Avenue to the Rest Area. This will provide a longer deceleration lane for vehicles exiting to the Rest Area which should reduce the number of vehicles slowing down in the right through lane and thereby should also help reduce congestion.
