This Program includes work on multiple bridges with construction, demolition, and widening, and other construction activities like milling, paving, and concrete saw cutting, which are being performed at night. This work is done at night because it is the only time we are contractually allowed to close lanes on the highways to complete the work efficiently and safely.
The equipment used to demolish the concrete bridge decks, roadway construction, and back-up alarms can create noise, which we mitigate and monitor as required. We take decibel measurements constantly to monitor noise levels throughout the nights. State laws and local ordinances require us to take these readings at the closest residence, and we cannot exceed 90 decibels at any time. In addition, we take readings from multiple locations throughout the Interchange and surrounding streets even if they are not the closest residences to our work locations. The highest reading spikes we have obtained are in the range of 75-80 decibels, with an average of 50-60 decibels per night.
Our contractors are contractually obligated to mitigate noise levels and implement practices to reduce noise; they have and they will continue to do so. All equipment used by our contractors have mufflers that reduce pollution and noise.
Backup alarms are necessary as they are required by OSHA to ensure the safety of workers working around the trucks and equipment.
Currently nighttime work is scheduled Sunday through Thursday nights from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
